Mitacs has opened applications for its Elevate winter Fellowship Program for Postdoctoral Students in 2018.

About the Award: Mitacs Elevate is the only postdoctoral fellowship in Canada with professional skills training component. Mitacs Elevate is a postdoctoral fellowship with a customized research management training component. Fellows address complex challenges through:
  1. An exclusive research management curriculum for postdoctoral fellows in any discipline
  2. A minimum one-year research project (normally two years in duration) with a partner organization in need of high-level expertise
  3. A Partner Organization Business Case, developed to outline project objectives, risks, and stakeholder success criteria, and ensure project value
Elevate fellows progress through the program in a cohort, giving them cross-disciplinary networking and peer-learning opportunities they might not have otherwise in their careers.
Over the two-year fellowship, Elevate fellows divide their time between their partner organization project and university-based research with their faculty supervisor.

Type: Fellowship

Eligibility: 
  1. Mitacs Elevate is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and international applicants. The fellow must be based at a university located in the same province as the partner organization for the duration of the fellowship.
  2. Fellows must be committed to the two-year fellowship, including the training and development, when applying to Elevate. Replacement and/or substitute fellows are not allowed.
  3. Postdoctoral fellows may apply for Mitacs Elevate fellowship if their date of graduation from a PhD program is no more than 5 years prior to the proposed start date the research project.  Fellows who have had a break in their career due to military service, illness, or family leave may be considered as exceptions and must be approved in advance of proposal submission. If this situation applies to you and/or you have any questions, please contact Mitacs at elevate(at)mitacs.ca.
  4. Successful candidates must have fulfilled all degree requirements (e.g., successful defense, final deposit, and signoff of dissertation) for their PhD at time of project start date which can be no later than September 5, 2018.
  5. All fellows who successfully enter into the Elevate program are responsible for ensuring that they meet the PDF eligibility criteria at their host institution and that they will hold a PDF status by the start date of their fellowship (no later than September 5, 2018) and for the two-year duration of the Elevate program.
  6. Fellows must not have been employed for more than six months in an R&D position outside the university after receipt of their doctoral degree; and
  7. Fellows must not have received an offer of employment from the partner organization except an offer of this fellowship or short-term employment of up to six months while awaiting a decision on the fellowship.
  8. If the application is not recommended for an award, the candidate may not be eligible to apply again once he or she has accumulated more than six months of industrial or partner organization work. It is therefore recommended that candidates accept a temporary contract only if necessary and that the period of the contract be kept as short as possible.
  9. Fellows who have held a Mitacs Accelerate award as a Masters, or PhD student are eligible to apply. Applicants may also apply if they have been approved for no more than 3 internship units of Accelerate funding (1 year equivalent) support at the postdoctoral level to be completed before the start of the Elevate fellowship.  Postdoctoral fellows who have already held a Mitacs Elevate award are not eligible to apply again to Elevate or to apply afterwards to Accelerate.
  10. Fellows cannot apply to multiple Mitacs programs for the same period of time.

The Visiting Fellowships in Canadian Government Laboratories Program is administered by NSERC on behalf of Canadian government laboratories and research institutions.

Effective October 13, 2017, applications will only be accepted if there is a statement of interest from a government scientist at an eligible laboratory. Contact vf-rslgc@nserc-crsng.gc.ca for details. Applications to the Visiting Fellowships in Canadian Government Laboratories Program will not be accepted after January 9, 2018. Existing funding commitments will be honoured.


The Visiting Fellowships in Canadian Government Laboratories (VF) Program provides promising emerging scientists and engineers with the opportunity to work with research groups or leaders in Canadian government laboratories and research institutions. Fellowships are awarded for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second and third year, at the discretion of the government department concerned.

About the Award: Approved candidates to be offered a fellowship will be selected by the individual government departments. Successful applicants will be notified by NSERC or by the interested government department. Approximately three months after receipt of a complete application, departments may request additional information (e.g., interviews) before offering a fellowship.

Type: Research

Eligibility: 
  1. You must have received a doctoral degree in the natural sciences or engineering from a recognized university within the past five years. Your application will be accepted if you are currently enrolled in a doctoral program at a recognized university; however, you must expect to complete all requirements for your degree (including the thesis defence) within six months of submitting your application.
  2. If you have withdrawn from the workforce and active research for maternity leave, or to raise a child for at least one year, after you received your doctorate, NSERC will extend the eligibility period to six years.
  3. You can apply only twice for a Visiting Fellowship in Canadian Government Laboratories.
You will not be allowed to take up your award until confirmation of completion of degree requirements is received. You may hold only one Visiting Fellowship.

There are no restrictions on the nationality of applicants, but awards are subject to a citizenship quota: two-thirds of awards must be made to Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Successful candidates who are not Canadians or permanent residents of Canada must satisfy Canadian immigration requirements.

Selection Criteria: Selection committees, appointed by the individual government departments, will be responsible for the pre-selection of applicants, recommending only the most meritorious applicants.

The selection committee will rate the applications according to the following criteria:

Call for Papers: World Bank ABCA Conference on Africa (Funded) 2018.

World Bank Group in association with the Stanford Committee are calling for papers examining the Challenges and Opportunities of Firms’ Productivity in Africa.

The fifth Annual Bank Conference on Africa (ABCA) will be held at Stanford, California, on May 31- June 1, 2018. It will cover various topics pertinent to firms in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is being organized jointly by the World Bank (Office of the Chief Economist for the Africa Region), and the Stanford Center on Global Poverty and Development.

The conference will include a keynote address by David McKenzie of the World Bank and opening remarks by Makhtar Diop (World Bank Vice-President for the Africa Region), as well as invited contributions by senior scholars.

Submitted papers with a focus on Africa are now welcome on any of the following topics:

Australia Awards in Africa (AAA), an initiative of the Australian Government, is a pan-African program of development scholarships and fellowships that offers 1,000 postgraduate scholarships each year to eligible African professionals.

Australian Government International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (AU IPRS)

IPRS enables international students to undertake a postgraduate research qualification in Australia and gain experience with leading Australian researchers. The scholarship covers tuition fees and health cover costs for scholarship holders, and health cover costs for their dependants.

Austrian Government Scholarships for International Students

Vanier Canadian Graduate Scholarships for Entry into Canadian Universities

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) was created to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and to brand Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning. VCS supports students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health. The scholarship is worth $50,000 per year for three years and is available to both Canadian and international PhD students studying at Canadian universities.

Chinese Government Scholarship Program

In order to promote the mutual understanding, cooperation and exchanges in politics, economy, culture, education, and trade between China and other countries, the Chinese government has set up a series of scholarship programs to sponsor international students, teachers and scholars to study and research in Chinese universities. China Scholarship Council (CSC), entrusted by the Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China (MOE), is responsible for the enrollment and administration of Chinese Government Scholarship programs.

The Government of the Czech Republic offers a number of undergraduate, Master’s and Doctoral scholarships within the framework of its Foreign Development Assistance Programme in support of the study of foreign nationals from developing countries at public institutions of higher education in the Czech Republic for 2012-2013 academic year.

Danish Government Cultural Agreement Scholarships for International Students

The Danish Government Scholarships under the Cultural Agreements are aimed at highly qualified exchange students wishing to immerse themselves in studies of the Danish language and culture or other fields of study related to Denmark. Danish Government scholarships programme covers 30-50% of the tuition fees, which means that the rest must be paid by the student. Students who are awarded a scholarship from UCN may under certain circumstances also receive an additional partial monthly living costs scholarship.

Government of Estonia MA/PhD Scholarships for International Students

The Estonian Government through the Estonian Institute offers international master’s students, doctoral students and post-doctorate researchers, scholarships to study at Estonian universities.  The Estophilus Scholarship is offered to finance foreign citizens with foreign higher education master’s, doctorate and post-doctorate researchers in their studies and research.

Finland Government Scholarships for International Students

The Finland Government scholarships are offered for a period of 3-9 months for Doctoral level studies and research at Finnish universities or public research institutes. The Finland Government Scholarship Pool programme is open to young researchers from all academic fields. The scholarship cannot be applied for Master’s level studies or post-Doctoral studies/research. The Finnish Government Scholarship Pool programme application form is not an application for a study/research placement. It is merely an application for funding.

Government of Flanders Mastermind Scholarships for International Excellent Students – Belgium

The programme aims to promote the internationalization of the Flemish Higher Education, as stated in the Action Plan for Student Mobility, Brains on the Move and bring international stidents into Belgium.  The duration of mobility is minimum 1 academic year and maximum the full duration of the master programme. If the student obtains less than 45 ECTS in the first year, then he/she loses the scholarship in the second year.

Government of Flanders Priority Country Scholarship Programme for African/International Students – Belgium

The Flemish Department of Education and Training offers scholarships for the academic year 2017-2018 under the new Priority Country Programme. The aim of this programme is to promote exchange of students between Belgium/Flanders and following priority countries listed in the link above. In Africa, Morocco and South Africa are list of countries eligible for this scholarship.

French Government (Eiffel Excellence) Masters and PhD Scholarships for Developing Countries

Masters and PhD Scholarships in France for Students from Developing Countries in Engineering Sciences, Sciences, Economics and Management, Law and Political Science. The Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Programme was established by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development to enable French higher education establishments to attract top foreign students to enrol in their master’s and PhD courses.

DAAD Scholarships in Germany for Students from Developing Countries

Each year, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) support young professionals from developing countries with a variety of scholarships to pursue internationally recognized Postgraduate degree in selected courses at German Universities.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree Student Scholarships & IMRD

Being an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree, the IMRD programmes is entitled to - each academic year - award a limited number of Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) Student scholarships to promising nationals of Erasmus+ Partner Countries. The aim of these scholarships is for these promising students to finance their participation to the IMRD programme.

The selection of awardees of these scholarships, is conducted by the IMRD Management Board. They take their decision carefully after assessing all complete application files of the academically admitted candidates for the IMRD programme who applied correctly and timely for the EMJMD Scholarships.

In the application procedure, you first apply for academic admission. When you are academically admitted, you will be sent the links to the scholarship application forms.


Application Deadline: 1st March 2018

Eligible Countries: Countries labelled as Partner countries under the EMJMD Consortium agreement.

To be taken at (University): Through IMRD you can study at least one semester at the following universities:

Eligibility:

  1. Applicants which have the official nationality of an Erasmus+ Partner Country, and who meet the IMRD admission requirements and have been be academically admitted by the IMRD Management Board to participate the IMRD programme. Other eligibility requirements of the program include:
  2. Applicants must have at least a Bachelor’s degree of min. 3 years from a university or recognized equivalent in preferably bioscience engineering or agricultural sciences, (preferably agricultural economics) with good overall scores (at least a second class or equivalent, preferably higher).
  3. Applicants must be able to demonstrate through their transcripts basic science training in: (i) mathematics and/or statistics; (ii) agronomy and/or biology and/or environmental sciences; and (iii) social sciences/sociology and/or rural development and/or economics.

Language requirements:

The English language proficiency can be met by providing a certificate (validity of 5 years) of one of the following tests:
–    TOEFL IBT 80
–    TOEFL PBT 550
–    ACADEMIC IELTS 6,5 overall score
–    CEFR B2 Issued by a European university language centre
–    ESOL CAMBRIDGE English CAE (Advanced)
 

Language of instruction is not accepted anymore, except applicants who are nationals from or have obtained a bachelor and/or master degree in a higher education institute with English as mode of instruction in USA, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland or Canada, and in the latter case a certificate that the mode of instruction was English has to be submitted.

Selection Criteria: 

  1. EMJDM Student Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit. Notwithstanding, the Selection and Award Committee takes the following 3 points into consideration:
  2. a fair gender balance amongst the scholarship awardees
  3. a fair geographical balance (ideally max. 2 scholarships per nationality)
  4. the choice for the Thesis Partner University in order for a fair balance amongst consortium partners (max. 1 EMJMD scholarship per Thesis Partner University per intake)

  3. contribution to travel and installation costs (either 5,000 or 7,000 EUR)
  4. 24 monthly subsistence allowances (= 24 x 1,000 => 24,000 EUR)

The EMJMD Student Scholarship does not include:

  1. visa costs
  2. study material
  3. transportation costs from one mobility to another
